The Covenant and Maryville softball teams met on Tuesday in a battle of Scots versus Scots. This go around it was the orange and maroon Scots who reigned victorious in both games of the doubleheader.
Game 1 Final: Covenant 1, Maryville 9 Ashlyn Gaines drove in what would turn out to be Covenant's lone run in the first inning with an RBI-double to right-center field.
Maryville went ahead 3-1 in the third inning as an RBI double to left-center field ended up becoming a three-run "Little-League" home run after a throwing error by Covenant.
The visitors tacked on another run later in the frame with an RBI groundout.
In the fourth inning, Maryville scored two more runs with a 2-RBI double to right-center field to put the score at 6-1.
An RBI single in the fifth inning and a 2-RBI single in the seventh inning for Maryville put it ahead 9-1.
Lauren Edgar (4.2 IP, 13 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) was Covenant's starting pitcher in the circle. Madison Bowden (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 HBP) pitched in relief and did not allow any earned runs. Freshman Haley Russell (2-for-3) led the Covenant offense with two hits. Maryville outhit Covenant 15-5. Covenant committed two errors while Maryville had none.
Game 2 Final: Covenant 2, Maryville 10 Maryville jumped ahead in the first inning with a pair of RBI doubles. Helena Nagy scored Gracie Lacle in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double to left-center field to make it 2-1. An outfield error extended the third inning for Maryville, allowing it to eventually score five unearned runs to go ahead 7-1.
Covenant opened the third inning with consecutive singles, but a groundout followed by a double play ended the threat before Covenant could score.
Three runs on three hits and one error put Maryville up 10-1 in the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, Russell tallied an RBI single to left-center field to score Covenant's second run.
With a runner on second base and two outs, a flyout to center field put the eight-run mercy rule in effect.
Covenant moves to 11-25 all-time against Maryville. Charley Clark (5 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) pitched a complete game for Covenant. Gaines (2-for-3) and Nagy (2-for-3, 1 RBI) each had two hits for Covenant to lead the offense.
Maryville outhit Covenant 11-8.
Covenant committed two errors while Maryville had zero.
Covenant hosts Wesleyan for a doubleheader on Saturday for Senior Day beginning at 1 p.m.
