Tennessee State Senior Senator Bo Watson, chairman of the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee, was recently recognized by the Tennessee Oncology Practice Society (TOPS) for his leadership in passing legislation that protects timely access to cancer treatment in Tennessee.
“Senator Watson’s work on this bill is a major victory for cancer patients across our state,” said Bradley Harrison, MD, medical oncologist at Tennessee Oncology and Treasurer of TOPS. “By eliminating step therapy for cancer treatment, he has ensured physicians can deliver the right treatment at the right time, without unnecessary delays.”
Officials said, "With a professional background of over 30 years in health care and a legislative career deeply focused on health policy, Senator Watson has consistently championed patient-centered reforms.
This year, he sponsored Senate Bill 2361, which eliminates the use of step therapy protocols for cancer care. Often referred to as "fail first," step therapy requires patients to try insurer-preferred treatments before receiving the one prescribed by their doctor. Under the new law, cancer patients, including those with metastatic breast cancer, can immediately begin the course of treatment recommended by their physician."
“This legislation puts patients first by removing unnecessary obstacles to life-saving care,” said Senator Watson. “I'm grateful for the recognition and proud to stand with Tennessee’s oncology community.”
The bill was co-sponsored in the House by Representative Rebecca Alexander.
