Anne Thacher Andreae, 76, known as Nancy to her family and friends, died peacefully on Oct. 29, 2003, in Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga after a courageous 16-year battle with leiomyosarcoma, an incurable form of soft cell cancer.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Mrs. Andreae was a devoted volunteer to many organizations including Volunteer Community School, Hospice, and her church, Pilgrim Congregational in Chattanooga.
Mrs. Andreae grew up in the Beacon Hill area of Boston, in a family with two older sisters and a younger brother. Upon graduating from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, she took a job with The International Society for the Protection of Nature in Brussels, where she first met Pierre Andreae, who was to become her husband.
She and Pierre renewed their relationship a year later in Colorado, where he served in the Army Chemical Corps and she worked for the construction firm of Swinerton and Walberg. After a wedding in Wellesley, Mass., and a summer in Nevada, the couple settled in Chattanooga, where they enjoyed a 49 year marriage and raised three sons, Peter, David, and Timothy.
In addition to devoting time to her family, friends, and volunteer work, Mrs. Andreae was an avid reader, traveler, student of yoga and eastern religions, and remained an active tennis player well into her illness. Through her participation in a leiomyosarcoma survivors group, she provided care and inspiration to others sharing her condition.
Mrs. Andreae is survived by her husband; three sons; five grandchildren, Morgan, John, Phillip, Thacher and Thomas; a sister, Sally Amory in Freeport, Maine; and a brother, Tim Thacher, in Pomfret, Vt.
Memorial services will be held at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Chattanooga at a time yet to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church or Dana Farber Cancer Center.
