  • Wednesday, April 30, 2003

Chris Brown, a 6-foot-7 forward from Polk Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at UTC, head coach Jeff Lebo announced Wednesday.

Brown, a native of Hopkins, S.C., averaged 16.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Winter Haven, Fla., school last year. He was tops on the team in blocked shots and ranked second in assists and steals. Brown led Polk to the Suncoast Conference Championship and was an All-Suncoast Conference Team honoree.

"Chris Brown's best basketball is in front of him," Lebo said. "He is what
we are looking for in an athlete. We will expect him to do a little bit of
everything on the court."

Brown led Polk to a state runners-up position in the 2003 Florida Community
College Athletic Association tournament and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Following his senior season at Lower Richland High School, he was selected
the Class 4A Player of the Year by The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C.
He helped LRHS to a state championship as a junior.

Brown is the fourth signee for the Mocs in this recruiting class. The
other three, Mindaugas Katelynas of the College of Eastern Utah, Casey Long of 71st High School in Fayetteville, N.C., and Matt Malone of Greeneville High School in Greeneville, Tenn., signed with UTC in the early period.

"We feel like we were able to address all of our needs with this recruiting
class," Lebo said. "We managed to bring in some size as we brought in a
lot of inside players, and we filled a guard position with Casey Long."
