Grasty First Said He Shot Matthew Coyle, Then Said Adams Did It

  • Thursday, October 7, 2010

A jury in the case in which Stephen Matthew Coyle was killed in a home invasion heard two different versions of what happened from Quinzell Grasty, who is standing trial in the courtroom of Judge Don Poole.

Grasty admitted in both statements that he and Michael Adams went into a house at 7616 Standifer Gap Road in April of last year looking for drugs and money.

In the first statement, he said he pulled the trigger on the sawed-off shotgun the pair had with them. In the second given a week later, he said it was Adams who fired the fatal shot. He said Adams handed him the weapon as they left, saying he was under house arrest and Grasty had a clean record so it would be harder for him if they were caught.

The murder case against Adams is set for Oct. 26.

Grasty said he was with a group of five individuals who talked about "hitting a lick" at the Standifer Gap Road address because they believed a Coyle roommate sold drugs and might have a large amount of cash.

He said the group told him about other "licks" and "stangs" they had hit, but he said it was his first outing.

Grasty, who is now 19, said he at one time was a member of the Treetops gang, but he said he dropped out. He said gang members were suppose to be loyal to one another, but he said none of them had come to see him in jail.

He said all five drove toward the house, but they left one youth out before getting there. He said he and Adams got out and the two others still in the vehicle later came back for them.

Grasty said they knocked on the front door, but could not get anyone to respond. He said they went to the rear and Adams ran and jumped with both feet against the back door several times until it finally gave way. He said he followed Adams as they went through a storage room and then Adams kicked open a second door.

He said he was still behind Adams when he heard the shotgun go off.

Grasty said one of the group later sold the shotgun. He said he does not know where it ended up.

Grasty is represented by attorney Robin Flores.
