Chattanooga State Showcases Images Of Pulitzer Prize Winning Photographer Robin Hood

  • Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Chattanooga State Community College will open an exhibition of photographs by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Robin Hood on Saturday. On view in the Augusta R. Kolwyck Library, the exhibit is a collection of 20 images, which were specifically selected for Chattanooga State and are included in the newly-published book, Historic Tennessee: Photographs by Robin Hood.

The exhibition is open to the public free of charge and will be on view beginning Saturday through Saturday, Nov. 20.

Chosen by Mr. Hood for this regional presentation, the photographs in the exhibition showcase places and scenes that have a historical relevance for Chattanooga and the surrounding area.

The book, Historic Tennessee, is a celebration of the past: a salute to Tennessee’s rich historical and architectural heritage. Through the beauty of Mr. Hood’s memorable images and an eloquent narrative by writer James A. Crutchfield, the publication captures the diversity and uniqueness of the Tennessee experience. Aside from the photographs featured in the Chattanooga State exhibit, the book includes imagery of sites that date back many thousands of years as well as pictures of places that recount three centuries of the Tennessee story.

Mr. Hood is an award-winning photographer and author of several books about America. He studied painting at UTC, which recognized his achievements in 1986 by presenting him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Mr. Hood served as an Army lieutenant in Vietnam prior to beginning his career with the Chattanooga Free Press. In 1977, he received the Pulitzer Prize for Photography for his photograph that featured a disabled veteran with his child as they watched the Armed Forces Day parade.

Mr. Hood’s photography has been central in several books about America and his home state of Tennessee. Most notably, he collaborated with Governor Lamar Alexander on the book THE TENNESSEANS. He went on to work with writer Barry Parker to produce NEYLAND: Life of a Stadium and THE TENNESSEANS: A People Revisited, which received the Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal as “Best Coffee Table Book in America” the year of its release. A former contributor to the popular “Day In the Life” book series, Hood lives in Franklin, Tennessee, and serves on the boards of several preservation organizations.

The exhibition of Mr. Hood’s photographs and the publication of the book Historic Tennessee: Photographs by Robin Hood are sponsored by First Tennessee Bank, Independent Healthcare Properties, LLC, Morning Pointe Assisted Living, U. S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc., Republic Parking System, Henderson Hutcherson & McCullough PLLC, and the State of Tennessee.
