Charles Eugene Stevens, 73, of Blue Ridge, Ga., formerly of Chattanooga, died on April 23, 2013, after a brave and courageous fight against pancreatic cancer. 

He was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga.

Born in Chattanooga, Charley graduated from City High School. While attending the University of Chattanooga, he was physical fitness director at Normal Park Elementary where he coached football, soccer and the Gray-Y basketball team.  Fondly known as “Coach”,  he coached football at St. Jude’s and served as athletic director at Wesley Community Center.  He was owner of Fairland Youth Club, Lookout Mountain, prior to becoming road photographer with Olan Mills.  He served six years in the Tennessee Air National Guard.

Charley graduated from John Marshall Law School and Atlanta Law School and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1975.  He was an adjunct professor at John Marshall Law School, Atlanta.  He practiced labor law and industrial relations law in Marietta, Ga from 1976 - 1979.

He was elected Polk County, Tn.’s first county executive from 1982-1986.  After his term of office, he practiced law in Blue Ridge, Ga., from 1987-1994.  After retiring from private law practice, he enjoyed substitute teaching at Fannin, Gilmer and Union County schools.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard G. Stevens and Margaret Lucile Johnston Stevens, and brother, Thomas Edward Stevens.

Charley is survived by his wife of 40 years, Annette Weaver Stevens; brothers, Robert R. Stevens and James W. Stevens; sister, Delores Jane Stevens; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at the Akins of Copperhill Chapel with Reverend Ray Harper officiating.  Interment will follow in the Zion Hill cemetery.
