Cleveland And Bradley County Discuss Merging Animal Control Services

During a joint meeting between the Cleveland City Council and the Bradley County Commission, Commissioner Charlotte Peak suggested merging animal control services between the county and city.

However, it was noted that there was a different expectation of services.

Still, many were unhappy with the current state of animal control facilities. Councilman Richard Banks said that because he is a resident of the city, he is not allowed to use county facilities under the current agreement.

In response, Mayor Tom Rowland said he would bring back the animal control committee to study the situation.

While nothing was decided on Monday, both the commission and the council agreed that the meeting helped everyone understand what the other side wanted.

During an afternoon city council meeting that followed, several Cleveland residents spoke in favor of saving the Waterville Golf Course.

One man said, "Let's give the people here, the seniors a chance to see if it can make money for a year."

In the past few weeks, the council has discussed possibly leasing the city-owned property to a management company.

In a past meeting, Councilman Bill Estes noted that the property was losing money for the city.

Director of Schools for the City of Cleveland Dr.

Martin Ringstaff also spoke about the joint meeting to make a correction. He said that Commissioner Jeff Yarber said the cost of the Mayfield Elementary had been $19 million, compared to the $12 million of a county school.

However, Dr. Ringstaff said Mayfield had only cost $13.6 million.

During the 3 p.m. voting session, the council passed a resolution to allow city residents to pay their taxes throughout the year instead of all at one time. The tax money can also be directly drafted from their bank accounts.

Interested taxpayers will have to enroll in the program by Feb. 15.

The council also voted to name a Greenway playground "Greenway Park."

Mayor Rowland's idea of reforming the animal control committee was also approved. The committee will include two city members, two county members and one community member.
