Several local police chiefs are among 36 applicants to be police chief in Cleveland.

Friday was the deadline to apply.

They include Red Bank Police Chief Tim Christol, East Ridge Police Chief J.R. Reed, Chattanooga Housing Authority Police Chief Felix Vess, Chattanooga State Community College Police Chief Stephanie Hill and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Police Chief Craig Hamilton.

Mark Gibson, the interim police chief, also applied.

The choice will be by City Manager Janice Casteel, who said she has named a selection panel to aid her. Those on the panel include Lee University President Dr. Paul Conn, Chamber Board President Robert Bradney and police consultant Larry Wallace.

Ms. Casteel said she expects it will take the month of August to complete background checks.

She said the group will narrow the list to 3-5, then there will be interviews.

Other applicants include Cleveland Officer Jon Collins, former Cleveland Commander Robert Renegar, Check Into Cash Safety Director Bill Dyer, Capt. Nathan Vaughn of the Chattanooga Police Department, and ERMC Vice President Wayne Jackson.
