The Signal Mountain Town Council is determined to change the very character of its community. There are substance issues such as their desire to increase density by changing the zoning from 1/2 acre to 1/4 an acre with dire consequences to schools, infra-structure, and sewer systems that are broken with the present density.
Now Dr. Spalding is spearheading an aesthetic change that is bringing Signal Mountain closer and closer to a Gunbarrel Road look, marring the pastoral beauty of our mountain. At the Design Review Committee workshop Tuesday, the chair said that Bob Spalding, the liaison to the DRC, said that the Town Council wants to see illuminated signs allowed. The chair's research indicated that many "peer" towns and cities in Tennessee forbid these signs.
Larry McClure, a DRC member, asked why we would want to change ordinances that were written to keep a certain look in Signal Mountain. Ray Boaz, a recent appointee to the DRC, said it was is feeling that the Council would override the DRC and allow additional lighted signs when applicants appealed.
Of course Dr. Spalding could better advertise his podiatrist business if he had a big illuminated sign with a giant foot and bunions and warts in different colored lights, but would this be best for the constituents? Do the constituents want giant lit chicken wings blinking as they are driving down Taft Highway, or a big burrito in lights?
Who are these Signal Mountain town councilmembers listening to? Obviously the rezoning decision benefits the builders, developers and realtors, but who besides Dr. Spalding would a giant foot, bunions, warts and all, benefit?
