City Council Approves $2.19 Million Purchase Of Body Cameras For Police Officers

  • Tuesday, December 6, 2016

The City Council on Tuesday night voted unanimously to approve the $2,191,544 purchase of body cameras for city police officers.

Councilman Chip Henderson, who heads the council's public safety committee, said the purchase was already included in the budget.

The city will get some help from the federal government in the form of a grant for almost $300,000 toward the expense.

Police Chief Fred Fletcher said the purchase from Taser International will provide officers with a camera they can dock at the close of their shift as well as a second camera they can take with them in case there is an incident on the way home.

He said it was fortunate that the department was deliberate in considering the purchase, saying the technology had changed dramatically in just two years.

To make the purchase possible, the department had to develop a use policy, which Chief Fletcher said he was instrumental in writing. It conforms with Department of Justice guidelines, it was stated, though the final okay is still awaited.

The officers are expected to have the body cameras in hand by the end of the first quarter of 2017.
