Anne Smith

Anne Bryant Smith, 85, of Soddy Daisy, died on April 16, 2016.

Born in Chattanooga on Oct. 8, 1930, to the late Mack A. and Alma Bond Bryant, Anne attended Normal Park in Chattanooga and Soddy Elementary School, elementary and junior high schools in Knoxville, Soddy Daisy High School, and Chattanooga High School, graduating from the latter in 1948. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education/English from the University of Chattanooga and a Masters in Library Science from George Peabody College in Nashville, enjoying a career in education that included teaching English at Sequatchie County high School and Bledsoe County High School and working as a librarian at Lebanon High School in Lebanon, TN. While there she served three years on loan from Wilson County Schools to Tennessee State Department of Education as a librarian evaluator for the career ladder program.

From childhood she had an affinity for literature and was especially fond of poetry and drama. She enjoyed being in school plays and programs and as an adult continued to work with school and community theater groups by acting, writing, directing, and providing backstage support for amateur groups wherever she lived. During her retirement years in The Villages, Florida she had the opportunity to participate in numerous plays as well as to pursue other interests including travel, golf, bowling, swimming, genealogy, and auditing college classes on different subjects. She served as a volunteer for many years in the community library there. She was a lifelong reader with a thirst for knowledge and was delighted when the internet made finding information so much easier.

Anne was christened and confirmed in the Second Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga, and in the many places she lived attended and was active in Methodist, Lutheran, and Episcopal churches as well. After she moved back to Soddy in 2012 she became a member of Soddy United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar Allen Lee, Jr. to whom she was married from 1950 to 1974, Carol Hart Smith, her second husband from 1988 until his death in 2009, and her daughter, Rosemary Lee Boroda, who passed away in 2013.

She is survived by her sons, William A. (Wanda) Lee of Soddy Daisy; Edgar A. (Lisa) Lee of Knoxville, TN; Thomas A. (Kristi) Lee of Tullahoma, TN; and her sister, Alma “Bonnie” Bryant of Chattanooga. She is also survived by grandchildren, Benjamin A. (Vivian) Lee of Atlanta, GA; Kelcey A. (Edward) Wilson-Lee of Cambridge, UK; Elizabeth C. Lee of Franklin, TN; Nathanael H. (Meredith) Lee of Richmond, VA; Hannah L. (Evan) Johnson of Cincinnati, OH; Courtney N. Lee, of Murfreesboro, TN; Logan A. Lee of Tullahoma, TN and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home on Monday, April 18, at 11 a.m. The family will receive visitors starting at 10 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Soddy Daisy Food Bank or a favorite charity.
