City Council Debating What Stance To Take On The Love Shack

  • Tuesday, April 26, 2016

City Council members have asked the city attorney's office to explore drafting an ordinance designed to deal with a "lingerie" store that officials said falls just short of the adult-oriented establishment category.

Phil Noblett, assistant city attorney, said figures supplied by The Love Shack on Highway 58 claim that the sale of adult-oriented items makes up 28 percent of the store's revenue.

Attorney Noblett said the city earlier set a standard of 33 and one-third percent because that ratio has been approved in court rulings.

Council Chairman Moses Freeman said, " What can we do citywide to address this whole issue and to guard our citizens against this type of business?"

Councilwoman Carol Berz said, "Our city is changing and we are going to be seeing more of these type stores." She said the city needs to act before they become as prolific as "predatory lending locations."

Residents opposed to the store said it is near a church, school and day care center.
