Randy Russell To Continue As Chief Magistrate

The County Commission on Wednesday voted 7-2 to keep Randy Russell as the chief magistrate.

Commissioner Greg Beck nominated another magistrate, Sharetta Smith. He and Commissioner Warren Mackey voted for her.

Commissioner Beck said he felt there was "bias" involved in the selection. He said, "I've been dealing with that all my life.

Magistrate Russell is white and Magistrate Smith is black.

Commissioner Joe Graham said those interested in being chief magistrate should take the initiative and let individual commissioners know.

The chief magistrate makes an additional. $5,000.

The magistrates set bonds and sign warrants at the County Jail.
