Gary Van Hooser, who had qualified to run as an Independent for County Commission District 3, has dropped out of the race and thrown his support to another Independent contender, Joe Smith.

Mr. Van Hooser on Friday signed papers at the Hamilton County Election office to have his name taken off the ballot for the November election.

He said, “After much prayer with my wife throughout this process, I feel that it is best for me to pull my name off the ballot for the November Election for the District 3 Commission Seat here in Hamilton County.

“As a veteran detective within the Sheriff's Department and a veteran of the United States Military, I have thought about running for the commission for many years. I have spoken to many people in the community and feel that at this moment, it is not my time to run for this office.

“This District 3 Commission seat does not belong to one man - the commission seat belongs to the community. As I have spoken to many friends in the area, the man who I will support in this election quickly approaching in November is Joe Smith. Joe Smith has dedicated his life to the service of others and to the youth of our community. Joe Smith plans to build back the relationship between the County Commission and County School Board to provide the proper education for our students. Joe will also will bring together a community advisory council. The welcoming of citizen input and decision making is the most important aspect that we as a community could ask for when it comes to electing a person to represent our interest. I ask that you join me in supporting Joe Smith for Commissioner in District 3 when you vote in November.”

Joe Smith said, “It is truly an honor to have the support of Gary approaching November. United, I am, and will continue to work very hard to earn your vote in District 3. Gary Van Hooser is an honorable man in this community. I thank him for his support through this journey.”

Meanwhile, the Republican choice, Greg Martin, will have a campaign opener at the Berkshire -Hathaway Realty Center, 5475 Hixson Pike, on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
