Survivorship Empowerment Class Open To All Cancer Survivors

  • Tuesday, February 21, 2017
CHI Memorial Rees Skillern Cancer Institute will host a Survivorship Empowerment class on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.  The free class is open to all cancer survivors, regardless of where they received treatment, and their care givers.

"People often wonder what they can do to get and stay healthy once cancer treatment is complete.  Lifestyle changes, like eating healthier and increasing physical activity, can lower your risk of cancer and death, according to a 2014 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
During the Survivorship Empowerment class, participants will learn about the role of nutrition in reducing the chance of cancer recurrence.  There will be a cooking demonstration and food sampling with dietitians from the CHI Memorial Reese Skillern Cancer Institute.  Survivors and guests will also learn how exercise and physical activity can help manage the side effects from chemotherapy and improve quality of life for cancer survivors," officials said.

“This class is a fun opportunity for cancer survivors to come together, talk with other survivors, and get great information about regaining and maintaining good health,” said Kim Shank, RN, director of clinical services, CHI Memorial Rees Skillern Cancer Institute.  “We want to empower survivors and provide them with the resources they need to live well after cancer.”
