Back Alley Productions will hold auditions for the stage adaption of Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest on Monday, Feb. 20, and Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Auditions will be held at the Back Alley Productions Scene Shop on the corner of Henderson Street and Chattanooga Street, directly south from the Mars Theater, 117 N Chattanooga St. in LaFayette.

“Cuckoo’s Nest is a famous story for an excellent reason,” Director Emily Miller said. “It’s meaningful, funny and raw. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is a fan of the movie, book or play to explore the story and exercise their acting muscles.”

Review for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest:

Set in the early 1960s, Cuckoo’s Nest explores a variety of themes such as mental illness, individuality, authority and societal influence. The story is experienced through the eyes of Chief Bromden, a docile inmate on the insanity ward floor in a state hospital. He details the arrival of a new inmate: the rebellious Randall P. McMurphy who is faking insanity to get out of prison.

On the lifeless ward, McMurphy makes it his priority to crack the head nurse, Nurse Ratched, who rules the ward with an iron fist. But the stakes grow dangerous as McMurphy implements defiant tactics in order to break the tyrannical Nurse Ratched. Roles are available for 12 men of all ethnicities, ages 18 and up; four women of all ethnicities, ages 18 and up.

“Anyone can audition,” Ms. Miller adds. “We are seeking anyone from seasoned performers to those who are new to theater. We’re looking to really connect with the audience through the characters, so we’re seeking actors who want to delve into juicy, funny and dramatic roles. The stage adaption effectively captures all the important elements of the book and movie without being a carbon copy. The story is very powerful and personal with a healthy dose of humor.”

Rehearsals will run on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning after auditions, with tech rehearsals every weeknight starting April 24 and continuing until opening night. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons from May 5-21.
