Soule, Joyce Hulsey

Longtime Volunteer At The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

  • Friday, January 25, 2019

Joyce Hulsey Soule, 88, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on January 25, 2019, surrounded by close family.

A 60-year resident of Chattanooga, she was the daughter of the late Buell L. and Helen Calloway Hulsey. Her husband of 44 years, Robert M. Soule Jr., preceded her in death in 2006.

Joyce attended Mars Hill then transferred to and graduated from Furman University with a B.S. degree in Sociology and Psychology.  She was a proud homemaker and had worked as a purchasing agent for Tennessee Valley Authority.  She was a dedicated volunteer at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, where she devoted many, many hours to helping create and sustain this locally founded organization.  Committed to and passionate about the museum, she volunteered from the 1960s to present in many roles including director of the museum’s gift shops and deli from the mid 1980s until the time of her passing.  During the 1990s she was instrumental in managing the re-organization and retirement of the original development debt, restoring Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to financial solvency, the most significant achievement in the history of the organization.  She was a long-time member of the Hixson First Baptist Church and a passionate supporter of Zola Levitt Ministries.

She was devoted to her family and is survived by her son, Robert M. Soule, III (Laqueta); daughter, Penelope S. Gault (Frederick); brother, Buell L. Hulsey, Jr. (Martha); and many nieces, great-nieces and a great-nephew.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Chattanooga Memorial Park with Reverend Charles Ensminger officiating.  Rick Taylor, Mike Usher, Gerry Crumbley, Frederick Gault, Andrew Gault, Darryl Armstrong, Kent Thomas and David Kaplan will serve as pallbearers.

Her family will receive friends from 4–7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, and from 12:30–1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Hamilton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zola Levitt Ministries, P.O. Box 12268, Dallas, TX 75225-0268, 214 696-8844 or Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416, 423 892-4289
