Charles Byron Estes, 63, of LaFayette, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2019.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the LaFayette First United Methodist Church. Charles was retired with Georgia Northwestern Technical College in Rock Spring where he was a CIS Program Director. When he wasn’t in the kitchen pursuing his passion for cooking and creating his award winning gumbo, Charles could be found gardening or pursuing his love of American history. He demonstrated a lifelong commitment to nature conservation and could be found spending time in his bird sanctuary where he loved feeding his birds. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy Dianne Estes; father, Charles Vernon Estes; and cousin, Shannon Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Donna M. Estes of LaFayette; daughter, Katie Estes of Chattanooga; sons, Brian Estes of Atlanta and Chris (Sandra) Frye of Knoxville; mother, Nellie Estes of Birmingham; brother, Cary (Laura) Estes of Birmingham; mother-in-law, Edna Long of LaFayette; grandchildren, Athena Trent, Alora Trent, and Katie Frye; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins survive. 

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the LaFayette First United Methodist Church with Rev. Randall Massengill officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service after 1 p.m.

Interment will be at LaFayette City Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Cary Estes, Mike Wilson, Chuck Roberts, Chris Frye, Alan Kubic, and Jim Bulman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the to the Rose Again Foundation www.roseagainfoundation.org or to the Helping Fund at the LaFayette First United Methodist Church: 301 S. Main Street, LaFayette, Georgia 30728.
