Lee Baseball Wins Two Over Lewis University

  • Saturday, February 22, 2020
After being in total command in winning the first game and improving their record to 7-4 with a 10-0 decision over Lewis University, a school making the long trip down from northern Illinois, the Lee baseball team could not find the strike zone in the second contest and also committed three errors in a 9-3 loss to the Flyers. The two teams will be back in action for the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

"It was a tale of two games for us.
We had great pitching, defense and clutch hitting in game one, but we were totally opposite in game two. Workman continues to give us dominance performances, but our staff gave up way too many freebies in game two.  I thought the play of freshmen Luke Hughes and Dylan Standifer was great today," commented Coach Mark Brew after his team slipped to 7-5 after the second game loss.

Game 1 – Lee 10, Lewis 0
The Flames pounded out 11 hits off four Lewis pitchers and got another solid contest from Logan Workman (3-0). The junior right-hander worked six innings and allowed just one hit in picking up the victory. He also struck out nine Flyers and issued only one free pass.

The Flames had a 1-0 lead after five innings before putting three runs on the board in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Landon Silver had two singles and a double to pace the Flames at the plate. He also scored a pair of runs. Dylan Standifer joined Parker Stahlman with two hits. Standifer scored a run and Stahlman collected a pair of RBI while crossing the dish once. Deshaun Smith came off the bench and ripped a three-run homer. He would later score another run. Newcomer Brandon Daniels also collected a two-base knock.

The Flyers got two hits from Ryan Schefske. Brad Littleton was the starting and losing Lewis pitcher. In four innings he gave up three hits, only one earned run, struck out three and walked two. Ryan Ward, Tyler Talbot and Nick Huisman followed Littleton to the mound.

Game 2 – Lewis 9, Lee 3

The second contest was a complete turnaround. Three of Lee’s four pitchers had problems locating the strike zone and issued seven free passes. The Flyers capitalized on the free passes plus three errors by Lee. They had only six hits in the win and improved their record to 1-1 on the year.

Anthony Cavalieri had two hits, two RBI and scored once to lead the Lewis victory. Austin Tittle also came up big for the Flyers, who stroked a pair of hits, drove in two runs and scored once. Joe Preusser took advantage of Lee walks to score twice as did Chris Zeschke who had one of Lewis’ six hits. Julian Everett had a one-base knock and scored a run.

The Flames had only five hits off two Flyer pitchers. Ben Davis started and was credited with the win. In four innings he surrendered four hits and three earned runs. He worked his way out of a jam after walking five Lee hitters. Jake Lotz came on for the final three innings and picked up the save. The lefty allowed just one hit and he fanned four Lee hitters.

Alex Harper-Cook (2-2) started and was charged with the pitching defeat. In four innings, he allowed three hits, five earned runs, walked three and struck out two. Michael Hendricks followed and surrendered a run after giving up two free passes. Coach Mark Brew quickly went to the pen again and called on Randall Coxwell. He also issued three walks, two earned runs and allowed a hit. Lance Hamilton came on to settle things down. In 1.1 innings he recorded a strikeout, a walk and allowed no earned runs.

Freshman Luke Hughes was 2 for 2 and tallied two runs. Alan Smith continued his solid hitting with a single, double, RBI and a run scored. Ryan Beamish ripped a double that plated Lee’s other two runs.
