UTC Women's Golf Heads To Virginia Beach

  • Friday, October 1, 2021

The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team played two tournaments in the span of seven days to open the season. It was a great start in Knoxville tying for third at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate before coming in 15th in Nashville when the putters went cold.

They’ve had a week to get those flat blades tuned up.

The focus turns to the Evie Odom Invitational in Virginia Beach, Va. The history at Princess Anne Country Club is very positive especially for the current clubhouse scoring leader.

Junior Esme Hamilton set the school record with a 65 in the opening 18 of the 2019 version of this event while tying the 54-hole mark of 205. The team’s 856 total in 2019 is the second best in school history for 54 holes. That year’s first round 280 and 571 score through two scorecards also rank second in 18 and 36-hole scoring.

She is off to a good start to this, her fourth season, at 71.83 strokes per 18 at just two over through 108 holes. Fellow junior Dorota Zalewska is right behind her at 72.17 or 4 over. The duo tied for second in the opener in Knoxville and looked poised for a strong campaign. They’re joined by an exciting trio in their first or second season in the Scenic City.

Sophomore Beatriz Barrios is building on a Southern Conference All-Freshman first year. She and freshman Megan Docherty both average 75.0 which is just ahead of freshman Carolina Hortian’s 75.50. Barrios and Docherty have been on the verge of low rounds, while Hortian had her best card last Sunday turning in 2-under 70 at the Mason Rudolph.

This week’s event is 54 holes, Sunday through Tuesday, with 18 per day. Hortian gets the Mocs started at 9:50 a.m., Sunday on hole No. 1. Barrios (10:01), Docherty (10:12), Hamilton (10:23) and Zalewska (10:34) follow with the ladies paired with players from South Florida and Coastal Carolina.
