Covenant Baseball Loses Conference Baseball Opener To Top Seed Maryville

  • Thursday, May 9, 2024

After severe thunderstorms postponed day one of the CCS Baseball Tournament, Covenant took the field on Thursday night against No. 1 seed Maryville. The Scots had their chances, but couldn't get any timely hits in a 2-0 loss.

Covenant threatened with back-to-back singles with two outs in the first inning, but a strikeout ended the frame.  The Scots put another runner on base in the second inning, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the threat. A second double play of the game in the fourth inning stopped another scoring chance for Covenant.

A solo home run to left field from Ashton Whiteaker in the bottom of the frame put Maryville in front.
Maryville added its second and final run in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI single up the middle. The runner who scored reached earlier in the frame on an infield throwing error.

Covenant was retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the eighth inning, Covenant had runners on first and second base with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Sam Cecil singled in the ninth inning, but that's all the Scots could do in their final chance to tie the game.

Covenant moves to 15-28 all-time against Maryville.  Covenant outhit Maryville 7-4.
Both teams committed one error in the field. Zeke Gilbert had two hits to lead the Covenant offense.
RHP Bryce Bollinger (8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) earned his fourth complete game of the year in the loss.

This is just the second game all season that Covenant has failed to score a run.

Covenant plays tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Huntingdon in an elimination game. If the Scots win they will play again tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
