Covenant Volleyball Wins 3-0 At Sewanee

  • Friday, March 12, 2021
Emma Kalbfleisch had 10 kills while Sara Delk and Summer Johnson had nine each to lead the Covenant volleyball team to an impressive 3-0 (25-18, 29-27, 25-23) win at Sewanee on Friday night inside Juhan Gymnasium.

Covenant is 4-0 for the first time since 2014 with the victory. It was Covenant's third sweep of the year as the Scots have dropped just one set in four matches.

Kalbfleisch tied a season-high with her 10 kills as she hit .562 to go along with a pair of blocks.
Delk added nine kills and eight digs, while Johnson also had nine kills in the victory. Rachel Bartlett tallied 32 assists with two blocks and three kills. Savannah Savage led the defense with 17 digs.

Covenant used a 6-1 run in the middle of the first set, capped by a Kalbfleisch kill, to go ahead 20-14. After Sewanee (0-2) trimmed the margin to 21-18, the Scots scored the final four points of the frame to take a 1-0 match lead.

The final two sets went back-and-forth.

The second set saw seven ties and four lead changes, but Covenant held on in the end to take a 2-0 lead. Covenant led 23-19 after a Sewanee error and later had two set-points that were staved off by the host Tigers to send the set into extra points.

Covenant trailed 26-25, but Kalbfleisch came up with a clutch kill and a Leah Buys ace gave the Scots another set-point chance at 27-26. Finally, consecutive kills from Bartlett and Kalbfleisch gave the Scots a 29-27 set win.

In the third, Covenant scored seven straight early in the set to take an 8-5 lead. Though the Scots led the rest of the set, the visitors had to hold off a final push from the Tigers.

A Delk kill gave Covenant a 24-20 lead, but Sewanee scored three straight to get within one (24-23). Jess Chesrown's second kill of the set was the clincher to give Covenant a 25-23 set win and the match.

Kyla Bailey added eight kills for Covenant and Grace Logterman had four total blocks (one solo, three assisted). Covenant out-blocked Sewanee, 6-5, and had a 41-33 advantage in kills.

Sewanee was led by Lilly Reilly's nine kills and 25 assists from Lexi Williams.

Covenant returns to Barnes PE Center on Wednesday to host Maryville in a doubleheader. Match one will count for USA South standings and will start at 5 p.m.
