Chattanooga Zoo hosted a special celebration Thursday in honor of Zoo President and CEO Dardenelle Long, as well as Friends of the Zoo (FOZ), the nonprofit organization that manages Chattanooga Zoo.
Officials said, "Darde started working at the zoo as a zookeeper on Aug. 21, 1985, meaning she reached 40 years of service yesterday. Similarly, FOZ was formed in 1985, marking 40 years of dedicated leadership and support for the Zoo."
Over 100 guests gathered to celebrate Ms. Long, FOZ and the growth of Chattanooga Zoo.
Senator Bo Watson, Representative Greg Martin and Representative Michele Reneau were all present, and event speakers included FOZ founding members, FOZ board members, Senator Watson, Chris Anderson of the city of Chattanooga and Ms. Long. Following the speeches and the presentation of a commemorative award to Ms. Long, zookeepers brought out ambassador animals for special meet and greets. Guests were also encouraged to tour the zoo, especially the new Cape of Africa section.
Officials said, "Now, Darde will continue to lead the zoo team through a master planning process as they create the framework for additional growth and change that will be implemented in the decades to come."
