Fred Cornelius Walpole
Fred Cornelius Walpole, 99, of Chattanooga, formerly of Memphis, passed away on Monday, September 20 2021 at his home.
He was born in Atwood, Tn., on October 16, 1921. He was the son of Lillie Mae and John J. Walpole and one of five sons. He lived his life in an upbeat way, in spite of losing two sons four years apart, when they were just teenagers.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce Milstead Walpole, and sons Ray and Joe Walpole. He is survived by his devoted son, Mark Walpole who has steadfastly ensured the safety and well-being of his dad since he moved to Chattanooga seven years ago. He also leaves several nieces and nephews who cherish his memory.
Fred lived most of his life in Memphis, where he met Joyce when the two were working at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Before that he served in the Navy during World War II. The navy sent Fred to Duke University for engineering and later he earned his degree from the University of Tennessee. He was a bridge and construction engineer for the Corps, did consulting, and was partner in a Memphis construction company.
Fred lived his faith, spending his life giving back to others. He delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly and homebound people: served on the foster care board in Memphis; and supported the food bank.
He won more medals than he could recall as a swimmer in Senior Olympics and represented Tennessee in his age group in the national competition several times. He often joked he won because he outlived everyone else in his age group.
Fred had a generous heart and a twinkle in his eye and found the good in almost every situation. After moving to Chattanooga he loved to go dancing at the senior center every Monday. He drove himself there until he was 96. He continued to lift weights until he was 97.
He especially loved his great niece, Gracie Gilbert and great-nephews, Nathan and Caleb Sexton and his special friend Dainese.
Fred was a long time member of Colonial Park United Methodist Church in Memphis and attended Faith Community Wesleyan Church here.
We hoped we would be celebrating his 100th birthday next month, but are so thankful for his long life and loving spirit.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 23, from 3-4 p.m. with the service beginning at 4:00 p.m. (EDT) in the East Brainerd Chapel.
Interment will be held Monday, Sept. 27, at 12:00 p.m. (CDT) at Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery (5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, Tn. 38119).
