Lee University Reschedules Fort Hill Cemetery Tours For Nov. 6

  • Thursday, October 27, 2022

Lee University will present the Sixteenth Annual Walking Tour of Historic Fort Hill Cemetery as part of its ongoing process of Rediscovering Historic Cleveland on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 3-5 p.m. Originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 30, the promise of inclement weather has prompted this postponement.

This year the tour will focus on historical characters who invested in the region’s schools.

Led by Lee University history majors and volunteers, the tours will introduce the community to several fascinating Clevelanders and Bradley Countians from the 19th and early 20th centuries who are buried at Fort Hill. Students and local performers dressed in period costume will bring these early residents to life.

This year’s characters include John W and Nena Howard, Herschell and Henrietta Green, DC and LB Arnold, Luke Lea and Adalaide Harle, George and Zollicoffer Sullins, Juliet and Harriet Smith, Robert and Mary Selvidge, and Tillman and Mary Payne.

Tours begin at 3 p.m. and will start every 15 minutes until dusk, lasting about 75 minutes each. The last tour will begin shortly after 5 p.m.

The cost is $5 per person or $2 for students.

Guests should park at Cleveland Christian Fellowship (695 S. Ocoee St.) and ride the van that will shuttle guests to and from the tour site, which is marked by designated tents. Guests will purchase tickets and receive a brochure at the tents before joining a tour guide and visiting the characters in the cemetery.
