Lee University Director of Golf John Maupin was announced on Monday by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAC) as the NCAA Division II recipient of the 2022 Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award presented by Golf Pride Grips. Golf Pride Grips will present the coaches with their awards during the Hall of Fame Banquet at the GCAA National Convention on December 5.
Maupin was among six collegiate golf coaches, including Ryan Hybl of Oklahoma (Division I), Steve Conley of Methodist (Division III), Brandon Miller of Keiser (NAIA), Walt Williams of Midland College (NJCAA Division I), and Chelsea Carroll of South Mountain (NJCAA Division II), that earned coach of the year honors for 2022.
“I am humbled and honored to receive the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year award,” said Maupin.
“I am very familiar with Coach Williams, his record as a coach, and all that he did for college golf. I never expected something like this, but I know it was only possible due to the efforts of many others! I have great help within our program, and assistant coach Evan Spence certainly deserves plenty of credit for the season we had. I am grateful to our players, a very special group, and I know their hard work made this possible. Thank you to the GCAA for their role in recognizing the efforts of college golf coaches throughout the country.”
Under Maupin’s leadership, the Flames won four tournaments this season, including the first NCAA Division II National Championship in program history, and Maupin was named Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year. Three of his players, Beck Burnette, Oliver Lewis-Perkins and Connor Pollman, earned All-GSC First Team and All-South Region honors in 2021-2022. Burnette was also PING First-Team All-American and GSC Player of the Year.
“I can think of no one more deserving of this honor than Coach Maupin,” praised Lee Director of Athletics Larry Carpenter. “He sets the example of what hard work looks like and his players have bought in knowing that good things happen with that kind of commitment. I have had the privilege of watching his teams climb in the National Rankings and compete with the best teams in the country. It was an absolute thrill watching them in Michigan as they captured Lee’s first NCAA DII National Championship. John is well liked in the coaching arena and is an outstanding ambassador for Lee and our Athletic Department. I am so proud of what he’s accomplished and pleased that he is being recognized for his efforts.
