Doug Daugherty, the founder of the conservative group Hamilton Flourishing, said former U.S. Senator Bob Corker was seeking to put his group out of business.
He said he was told by Chris Maclellan of the Maclellan Foundation that Senator Corker had called him to ask that the funding for Hamilton Flourishing be cut off.
Senator Corker declined comment.
The Maclellan Foundation denied the allegation.
The group said, "Chris Maclellan has not spoken with Senator Corker about Hamilton Flourishing, nor has the Senator ever talked with Chris or anyone at the Maclellan Foundation about Doug Daugherty and his non-profit activities.
"The Maclellan Foundation has not funded Hamilton Flourishing in nearly four years.
"The Maclellans and the Foundation have no knowledge or opinion about the allegations made by Hamilton Flourishing regarding the recent primary election for our county’s mayor. We will be happy to work alongside whomever is ultimately elected to serve our community in that important capacity."
Mr.
Daugherty said he has not received a final answer from the Maclellan group that he said has long funded his conservative activities. He was backed for many years by Hugh O. Maclellan, father of Chris Maclellan.
Mr. Daugherty said, "It's because of our stance on the Wamp illegal election and because of the people we've called out as RINOs (Republicans In Name Only)."
He said he had sent an email blast seeking other funding, but no money has come in.
Mr. Daugherty said in the plea to supporters:
