Review for The Crucible:
When the children of Salem Massachusetts start mysteriously falling ill a common incident results in an out-of-control panic. Fear spreads until the life of the entire village has been disrupted. Suddenly people are blamed for practicing witchcraft. For the rule-oriented God fearing Puritans of Salem that accusation is a death sentence.
Orphan Abigail Williams quickly takes advantage of the chaos and confusion to accuse her former boss and the wife of her lover Elizabeth Proctor. But she discovers that she has no control over the wave of panic sweeping over all in its path. While fending off life-threatening accusations of witchcraft self defense becomes a race to blame your neighbor before they can blame you as seen with the slave woman Tituba. Farmer John Proctor suddenly finds himself confronted with the choice of either saving his life or his honor. Is a life that can only be bought at the expense of one's neighbor a life worth living?
As described by playwright Arthur Miller himself, "the play seems to present the same primeval structure of human sacrifice to the furies of fanaticism and paranoia that goes on repeating itself forever as though imbedded in the brain of social man."
