Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis senior Kerim Hyatt has been tabbed the Southern Conference Player of the Week following his efforts last weekend in a pair of league wins over ETSU and Mercer, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Hyatt earns the award for the second time in his career after picking up the honor on February 22, 2022 of last season. It’s the second weekly honor for a Moc this season after Ryan Mudre was awarded back on February 21. It marks just the second time in program history two different Mocs were represented in the weekly honors.
“Certainly, Kerim’s play has been outstanding, and more importantly, he exhibits great leadership for our team,” said head coach Chuck Merzbacher.
“No doubt, he was instrumental in getting some historic wins for our program.
I’m very proud of him.”
Hyatt finished the weekend a perfect 4-0 between singles and doubles play to help lift Chattanooga (13-4, 3-0 SoCon) to its best start in league play since 2002. In the team’s first win over ETSU since 2001, Hyatt posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dimitri Badra at No. 1 singles after picking up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles alongside partner Kristof Kincses.
During Sunday’s 4-3 win over Mercer, Hyatt once again earned a victory at the top singles position behind a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Mariano Argote in addition to a 6-1 winner with Kincses in No. 2 doubles. Hyatt has now won his last three singles matches and last five doubles matchups, all with Kincses.
Chattanooga returns to action this weekend with a pair of home matches against Furman on Saturday and Wofford on Sunday. Saturday’s tilt will start at Noon ET while Sunday’s contest will begin at 2 p.m. ET at the UTC Tennis Center on campus. Live stats and results will be available.
