Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. continues its commitment to “Soaring to Greater Heights by Enhancing Our Environment” by partnering with Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center to plant trees.
"We are hosting two events to celebrate National Arbor Day," officials said. Arbor Day is a holiday that celebrates the planting, upkeep and preservation of trees. The first event will take place on April 22, with the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) at 10 a.m. YLI is a youth-led and highly interactive leadership development program designed to empower and engage youth, ages 11-13.
"The second event with take place on April 28 at 2 p.m. Both events will take place at Reflection Riding at 400 Garden Road. Reflection Riding has graciously donated trees to be planted for both events. We will be planting eleven Yaupon Hollys, five American Hollys and five Spicebushes on the 22nd and two Azaleas and a Redbud tree both with pink blooms on the 28th.
The benefits of planting trees are as they grow, these trees will be cleaning the air, provide habitat and cool our city. Trees play a critical role in creating healthier, safer and more connected communities. They clean our air, filter our water and even slow storm surges and flooding in our cities. Trees also provide shade and cool our cities by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths in urban areas. One large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for up to four people. That’s why Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is on a mission to plant 3,100 more of them every year. Let’s get planting."
