The Chattanooga Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will honor Captain Larry Taylor, the latest Medal of Honor winner, at the Walden Club on Tuesday, Aug. 22, with a social starting at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Captain Taylor grew up just south of Chattanooga in Saint Elmo. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and participated in the ROTC program. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and attended the Army’s Aviation School, and served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War.
He was previously awarded a Silver Star for his actions on the night of June 12, 1968.
Now, after a years-long endeavor by local veterans, lawmakers and others, including former Army Ranger Dave Hill, one of the rescued solders, and retired 4-star General B. B. Bell, Taylor's Silver Star has been upgraded to the Medal of Honor.
