Huntingdon 2, Meigs Co. 0 (Class 2A)

A day after their bats were blazing and the runs coming fast and furious, Meigs County saw their production hobbled by Huntingdon in a Class 2A quarterfinal game, 2-0.

With both teams enjoying strong pitching performances, Huntingdon was stronger at the plate.  The Lady Tigers’ Lainey Fitzgerald started and struck out nine, allowing seven hits, two runs with no walks. Sierra Howard went two innings in scoreless relief, giving up no hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Howard led Meigs at the plate with two hits.

The Lady Tigers now face Riverside in an elimination game.

The Lady Trojans fell behind early and could not manage to find any traction as the Gibbs Lady eagles pounded them in a Class 3A winner’s bracket game early Wednesday afternoon.

Soddy Daisy now must fight their way through the loser’s bracket, starting with a rematch with Creek Wood later Wednesday afternoon.

South Pittsburg continued its battle through the loser’s bracket following a weather delay Wedneday night at the Class 1A state championships. The Pirates used a late innining barrage to eliminate Oakdale. 7-1.

Jake McGullion and Bailey Fults led South Pittsburg with two hits each, while Luke Rector went the distance for the win, striking out nine.

South Pittsburg 6, Union City 2 (Class 1A)

South Pittsburg remained alive in the Class 1A tournament with a 6-2 win over the Union City in Golden Tornadoes Wednesday morning loser’s bracket action. Zach Tierney tossed a complete game for the win, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Pirates scored all their runs in the sixth, starting when Tierney drew a bases loaded walk scoring one run. Luke Rector followed with a line drive double to left pushing two more runs across the plate. Alex Phillips hit a two out drive to right accounting for two runs and Jake McGullion finished out the rally, scoring on a passed ball.

The win earns South Pittsburg a rematch later in the day with Oakdale, to whom they lost on day one by a 5-2 count.

Barrett Anderson’s seventh inning heroics almost kept Signal Mountain’s hopes alive in the Class 3A loser’s bracket Wednesday morning – almost. With the Eagles down 7-2 in the top of the inning, the senior connected for a two out grand slam over the over the right field fence to pull his team within one run. However, that was where the Eagles’ dreams would die, on a pop fly to right to end the game.

Signal Mountain took an early lead in the first inning on a Cash Keene sacrifice fly and added another in the third when Keene hit into a fielder’s choice. Station Camp responded with three of their own in the bottom of the inning and four more over the next three innings.

Ben Timblin led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. Anderson and Max Rackel each had a pair of hits for Signal Mountain.

Christian Brothers 5, Baylor 3

Just over 24 hours from their late inning heroics giving them a win over Christian Brothers, the Red Raiders saw another gargantuan effort fall short as they were eliminated from the DII-AA state tournament by the Purple Wave.

Trailing by five going into the top of the seventh, Baylor rallied for three runs before seeing the last out of its 2024 season.

The 2024 Division II Mr. Baseball, as awarded by the TBCA, Tomas Valincius retired 10 by strikeout but Baylor went down to Briarcrest, 4-0, in the DII-AA winner’s bracket Wednesday afternoon. The Red Raiders now have to rebound against Christian Brothers, a team they rallied past last night, to make it to tomorrow’s championship game and another rematch – this time with Briarcrest.

Valincius gave up six hits while walking only one in seven innings of work. The only hit managed by Baylor was a double by Kilby Hartley in the bottom of the fifth.

DII SOFTBALL

Silverdale 7, Lakeway Christian 1 (Class A)

Hitting out of the three spot, Kennedy Stinson led the Lady Seahawks to their 48^th win and berth in the DII-A state winner’s bracket finals as Silverdale notched a 7-1 win over the Lakeway Christian Lady Lions.

Stinson drove one over the left field fence in the in the first netting two runs and then singled in the the second for another RBI and tallying her fourth RBI with a sac fly in the sixth.

The Lady Seahawks’ ace left hander, Ella Cunningham went the distance for the win, sitting down 14 Lakeway batters on strikes, while scattering three hits and walking three.

Cunningham, Stinson, Jaliyah Whitaker and Gabbie Hensley all had two hits for Silverdale.

The Lady Seahawks next face USJ, 9-7 winners over Knox Grace, at 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

Baylor 8, Chattanooga Christian 4 (Class AA)

The Baylor bats were booming as the Lady Red Raiders collected 13 hits in the 8-4 win over Chattanooga Christian in a DII-AA Final Four match-up with their cross-town rival.

Knotted at two-all heading into the bottom of the fourth, Baylor erupted for six runs on seven hits with Riley Oleksik driving in two on a homerun to left. Also in the inning, Amiya Leach, Addi Yates, Chloe Cunningham and Holly Merritt all singled, Kaylee Snyder doubled and Rory Oleksik tripled

Nyla Halfacre and X Lewis each had two RBIs for CCS.

Snyder started for Baylor and went five innings, giving up four hits and four runs, while striking out nine and walking two. Avery Shamblin struck out six in two innings of relief for the Lady Red Raiders.

Baylor advances to play St. Benedict (31-1) at 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, while the Lady chargers face CPA  (17-8)in a loser’s bracket game, also at 3:30.
