GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Playing consistent golf from start to finish the Lee University women’s golf team will be tied for third with the University of North Georgia when the second round of the 54-hole NCAA Division II South Regional Championship begins on Tuesday morning. The tournament is being staged at the Chattahoochee Golf Club and second-round play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. The Lady Flames will tee off at noon.
The Lady Flames completed the first 18 with a 7-over par 295. Flagler College (Fla.) is the leader with a 2-over 290 while Nova Southeastern University is three strokes ahead of Lee at 4-over 293.
Lynn University (Fla.) rounds out the top five with an 8-over 296.
The highlight of the day was set by senior Haley Blevins. She nailed a 25-yard shot from off the green for an eagle on the No. 15, par 4, 318-yard hole. Blevins and Banthita “Pearl”
Phoncharatkun were Lee’s leading scorers with 1-over 73s and tied for 14th. Hannah Nall followed with a 2-over 74 (tied for 25th) and Lehane Louis Dumond had a 3-over (tied for 31st) giving the Lady Flames the four scores that counted. Olivia Ireland started strong but finished with a 7-over 79.
Claudia Hastings, playing as an individual, and Abby Franks (North Georgia) are the first-round leaders in the medalist event with a 4-under par 68. Rosanna Halls (Nova Southeastern) and Amelia Ruiz (Lynn) are tied for third with a 3-under 69 while Millie Thompson and Clare Gimpel (Fla. Southern) round out the top five with 2-under 70s.
Coach Geandra Almeida said, "Very solid round. I am very glad with the way they played today. We made some mistakes but recovered. We stayed focused and had some fun and that was the goal today to stay in the moment. We fought for every birdie today and we are in a good position."
