  • Tuesday, June 10, 2025
After twenty-three successful years wearing the green and gold, Jim Schermerhorn has announced his retirement from coaching Boys and Girls Soccer at Notre Dame High School. Succeeding Schermerhorn as head coach will be Tyler Roberston, a 2014 graduate from Notre Dame.

“To the Notre Dame community, family; this has been a hard decision for me, but I will be retiring as Head Boys and Girls Coach Soccer coach. I have to thank my wife and family for all their support over the years. It has been a privilege and an honor coaching here and working with the administration, faculty, and fellow coaches,” said Schermerhorn.
“Most of all thank you to the young men and women I've had the pleasure of meeting and coaching over the years. I've been truly blessed and have loved coaching at Notre Dame High School.”

In his tenure at Notre Dame High School, Schermerhorn has led the boys and girls soccer programs to 24 State Tournament appearances, 19 District 2 Championships, and 15 East Region titles. In 2010 the Notre Dame girls claimed the TSSAA Div. II, Class A State Championship. His teams have also had four State Final 4 appearances and were State runners-up four times. The most recent was the run the Notre Dame boys had in 2024 reaching the state title game in Murfreesboro. Schermerhorn was named the Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps Coach of the Year four times.

“Coach Schermerhorn leaves an incredible legacy as a coach, mentor, and has impacted hundreds of families over the past 23 years at Notre Dame High School, “said Notre Dame Head of School Dr. Eric Schexnaildre. “Jim is a total class act and one of the most selfless people I've had the pleasure of working with. Jim is an "old school" coach with a strong work ethic and his detailed-oriented coaching style has been a trademark of our play on the field over the last two decades. His accomplishments on the field speak for themselves and his impact on the Notre Dame community will be missed.”

Tyler Robertson is a seasoned soccer coach and former standout player with a strong record of success at both the high school and club levels. A 2014 graduate of Notre Dame High School, Tyler was a 3x All-Region, 2x All-State, and 2x Best of Preps selection. He went on to play four years at Tennessee Wesleyan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, and later received his Master of Business Administration from Carson-Newman University. Over the past seven years, Tyler served at Chattanooga Christian School (CCS), most recently as Director of Soccer and head coach for both the boys and girls high school programs. Under his leadership, the girls posted a 39-12-4 record over three seasons, reaching the TSSAA DII-AA State Quarterfinals each year and earning a trip to the DII-AA East Region Championship. The boys team achieved a 31-4-2 record across two seasons, earned a national ranking of #5, and also made back-to-back TSSAA DII-AA State Quarterfinals appearances and back-to-back appearances in the DII-AA East Region Championship.

“We are excited to announce the hiring of Tyler Robertson as our head soccer coach for our girls and boys programs,” said Head of School Dr. Eric Schexnaildre. “Tyler brings a wealth of knowledge as a soccer coach and is well connected within the soccer community. He is a high energy guy who motivates and maximizes his players' effort and ability on and off the field. I'm thrilled for our players to be led by Coach Robertson and the impact he will have on their development as players and students. Go Irish!”

Tyler’s club coaching experience includes work with Chattanooga Red Wolves and Premier Soccer Academy. In 2023, he was honored as the Tennessee State Soccer Association (TSSA) Competitive Male Coach of the Year, and in 2022, helped lead PSA to a USYS National Championship.

With a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build high-performing programs, Tyler is excited to return home to the Fighting Irish!

“It’s an incredible privilege and honor to return to Notre Dame—this place shaped who I am, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to give back to this community. I’m excited to build on the tradition, invest in these student-athletes, and lead a program that means so much to me, both personally and professionally, said Coach Robertson”

I’m incredibly thankful for the foundation laid by Coach Schermerhorn—he’s been a mentor, a role model, and someone I deeply respect. To follow in his footsteps is an honor, and I’m committed to carrying forward the standard he set while building on the legacy he helped create.”
