Judge Paul Painter, 86, of Rossville, died on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002.
A native of Conasauga, Tn., in Polk County, Judge Painter moved to Rossville in 1941 and practiced law there until 1967 serving as City Attorney of Rossville for 25 years. Beginning in 1967, he served as Judge of the Superior Courts of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit comprised of Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, and Walker Counties and retired as Chief Judge of the Circuit in 1983.
Judge Painter was a 25 year member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia serving as President of the Georgia Council of Superior Court Judge and as Chairman of the State Judicial Council of Georgia. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WWII. He was a member of McFarland United Methodist Church, Rossville Masonic Lodge, Alhambra Shrine Temple, Rossville Exchange Club, Chattanooga City Farmers Club, Lookout Mountain Bar Association, and the Chattanooga Bar Association. Having worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps after graduating high school, Judge Painter was active in CCC Alumni Organizations.
He was survived by his wife of 63 years, Juanita Davis Painter; daughter and son-in-law, Paulette and Calvin Grant of Chattanooga; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Judi Painter, Jr., of Savannah; grandsons, Phil (Sandy) Grant of Fayetteville, GA, Brad (Cheryl) of Ft. Oglethorpe, Paul Painter III of Savannah; brothers, Ralph Painter of Chattanooga, Rev. Ted Painter of Chattanooga; sister, Betty Thomas of Memphis; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the South Crest Chapel with Rev. David Tullock officiating.
Burial will follow at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends after 11 a.m. on Wednesday and then from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
