L. Bernard Stone, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, in his home.
Mr. Stone was a longtime Chattanooga resident who graduated from Ringgold High School and the University of Chattanooga.
After serving in England during World War II, he studied at the Wharton School of Business before returning to Chattanooga to begin his accounting career in 1954.
After many years, Mr. Stone founded Bernard Stone & Company, CPAs, and was a partner with Joseph Decosimo and Company beginning in 1977.
Mr. Stone served as president of the Tennessee Society of CPAs from 1971-72, as President of the Chattanooga Kiwanis Club from 1995-96 and later as a divisional Lieutenant Governor.
Mr. Stone was a founding trustee of the Tennessee Federal Tax Institute and was the recognized by the TSCPA with its 1993 Public Service Award.
He also served with several local civic boards including The Chattanooga Symphony, the Chattanooga Lung Association and Orange Grove.
Mr. Stone married Bettye Doris Horner, a Chattanooga resident, in 1952, and was a member of the Brainerd Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years.
He is survived by his wife and two children, Lynette Adams Ritvalsky of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, and Lawrence Bernard Stone Jr. of Chattanooga; grandchildren James Travis Adams of Winter Park, Florida, Landon Tyler Adams of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and Prescott Alled Stone of Signal Mountain, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters Ruth Alexander and Louise Wells and two brothers Robert Stone and William Stone, all of the greater Chattanooga area.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Brainerd Baptist Church with Dr. J. Ralph McIntyre and Dr. Darryl L. Craft officiating.
A private burial will follow.
