  • Thursday, April 6, 2006

A new art gallery is open at Five Points in Cleveland, Tenn. Jere Chumley and Jack Orr, co-owners, are opening Chumley/Orr Gallery at 237 Inman St., East.

The location is across the street from the Headquarters of the Cleveland/Bradley County Rescue Service and the Museum Center at Five Points.

Chumley/Orr Gallery presents local and regional Contemporary American Artists’ and all works are for sale. The standard for the aesthetic level presented by Chumley/Orr Gallery is set by the first collection of local and regional artists.

There are currently over 20 artists whose works have been selected for the gallery. Future plans include featuring the work of a single artist along with selected works of the other artists. Both Mr. Chumley and Mr. Orr are artists and each will also have paintings for sale in the Gallery.

Jack Orr, Co-Owner, originally from Cleveland, is retired and currently resides in Cleveland. Mr. Orr is a painter who has exhibited locally and regionally, and has collected several awards for his work in oils.

Jere Chumley, Co-Owner, originally from Nashville, is retired from Cleveland State Community College, and resides in Georgetown, Tenn. Mr. Chumley is also a painter with degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. He organized and headed the art department at CSCC for 36 years, where he was the first faculty member hired in 1967, the first year of the college. During his tenure at Cleveland State, Mr. Chumley gained experience at organizing art exhibitions, and conducted the Tennessee Valley Art Competition for 22 years before retiring in 2003. That experience, according to Chumley, “…set the stage for becoming an art gallery owner. Jack and I discussed the idea of a contemporary art gallery in Cleveland for a long time. Then Jack took the lead, and he found the perfect place for an art gallery in Cleveland, Tenn.”

Chumley/Orr Gallery has officially been at 237 Inman St., East, Cleveland, since March 1. The gallery is open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., with an opening reception planned for Friday, April 28, 5–8 p.m. Inquiries may be addressed to Jack Orr or Jere Chumley at Chumley/Orr Gallery, (423) 614-5732, or email chumleyorrgallery@hotmail.com.
