Freeman, Robert Parrish

Active Volunteer Following Lifelong Career In Banking

  • Tuesday, January 2, 2007

Robert Parrish Freeman, 65, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, after a courageous fight with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

He was the son of the late James Vernon and Mary Parrish Freeman. He was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tn., Furman University and Atlanta Law School. After discharge from the U.S. Army, he began his banking career with the First National Bank of Atlanta. Subsequently, he joined American National Bank and Trust Company of Chattanooga. After 29 years of service, he retired from SunTrust Bank, but continued working as an independent contractor for Columbus Bank & Trust Company and Synovus Securities of Columbus, Ga. for several years.

In 2004, due to health issues, he could no longer work full time, so he became an avid volunteer with the Tennessee Aquarium, Memorial Hospital, Ronald McDonald House-Family Room, Hunter Museum of American Art and the treasurer of Horse Creek Farms Homeowners Association.

Through his banking jobs, volunteer positions and pulmonary rehab, he made many friendships, which he cherished.

He was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. Bob was a wonderful husband, as well as a devoted father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Dorothy Wallace Freeman; daughter, Branan Freeman, of San Diego, Ca.; son, Parrish (Gwynne) Freeman, of Salt Lake City, Ut.; and daughter, Idell Wingate, Franklin, Tn.; He was the grandfather of Addie and Trey Freeman and Anna Lea and Elizabeth Wingate.

A memorial service honoring Bob will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church in the Marr Chapel with Dr. William Dudley officiating. The family will receive friends before and following the service.
