Huey Robert Hightower Sr., 92, of Chattanooga, died surrounded by his loving family at his home on Saturday, August 25, 2007.

He was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Phenix City, Ala.

Mr. Hightower was a longtime member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

He had to drop out of school in the seventh grade in order to work and support his parents. Yet despite his educational background, he accomplished much in life and was loved by many. He was employed as a sales agent and manager for Washington National Insurance Company and National Trust Life Insurance Company. He owned and operated two sporting goods stores. He served as manager of the Stuart Heights Swim and Tennis Club for over 20 years.

He coached many basketball and softball teams for St. Luke United Methodist Church, including many championships. He started “Teen-Town” at St. Luke to provide social activities for teenagers in a supervised setting. He helped organize youth baseball leagues at Rivermont. He served as a troop leader for an Explorer Scout Troop. Throughout his adult life he provided positive Christian leadership and sacrificial service to his church, family and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Neil and Josie Ann Hall Hightower; his wife of 70 years, Helen; four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include five children, Bob Hightower, Elsa (Bob) Stott, Judy (Dean) Massengale, Jerry (Debbie) Hightower and Betty Tipton ; six grandchildren, Lara Juhl, Jan (Brett) Burgess, Bobby (Wendi) Stott, Roy (Renee) Massengale, Dale Edmonds and Melanie (Orion) Fagan; also 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Smart officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Tuesday to service time at the church.

Mr. Hightower’s children would like to thank the doctors, nurses, therapists and other staff members of Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Chattanooga for their exceptional and compassionate care provided to their father recently.
