Dayle May Jewelers Leaving Downtown

  • Tuesday, February 5, 2008

One of downtown Chattanooga's oldest businesses is leaving for the North Shore. John Tessman, owner of Dayle May Jewelers, said the store at 12 W. 8th Street, will close Feb. 15.

He plans to reopen in leased space at the new Two North Shore on March 1.

"It was a better business opportunity for us," Mr. Tessman said.

Dayle May Jewelers has been downtown for 86 years. Mr. Tessman and his wife, Jerry, bought the business from Dayle May 21 years ago.

The store will occupy space fronting on Manufacturers Road at the development that includes Greenlife Grocery, Rock Creek Outfitters and other firms.

Dayle Mayle Jewelers currently rents a portion of a building on Market Street. The remainder of the store is in a building owned by Mr. Tessman and his wife.

He said they have no plans to sell the downtown building. The portion fronting on Broad Street was recently renovated and is occupied by keaton's Shoes.

Steve Arnsdorff said Two North Shore is fully leased.

He said Northwest Georgia Bank plans to build at the site, and another 30,000-square-foot building will be started soon.

Mr. Arnsdorff said the project is LEED certified. He said Greenlife Grocery tripled its space, but its utility bill has only gone up 30 percent.
