The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) has been awarded $1,200,000 in state awarded federal funding through the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT) Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program. With an additional required 20 percent local match from the city of Chattanooga, this brings the total investment to $1.5 million to support the purchase of three new all-electric shuttle vehicles, expanding and modernizing CARTA’s nationally recognized zero-emission shuttle service, officials said.
“This award represents a major step forward in our mission to provide clean, convenient, and accessible transportation options to the Chattanooga community,” said Charles Frazier, CEO of CARTA. “By replacing vehicles and expanding our fleet of all-electric shuttles, we’re not only improving rider experience but also reaffirming our commitment to environmental responsibility and downtown vitality.”
The CMAQ Program is a federally funded initiative designed to help state and local governments reduce vehicle emissions and traffic congestion in areas that do not meet federal air quality standards. CARTA’s proposal was selected through a competitive scoring process, based on its strong potential to reduce emissions and enhance the region’s transportation network.
The funding will allow CARTA to strengthen its “Park Once” strategy by supporting access to CARTA-managed garages, where visitors can park and ride for free.
Officials said, "With First Hour Free parking at Shuttle Park North and Shuttle Park South paired with zero-fare electric shuttles, riders can explore downtown, St. Elmo, the Southside, and North Shore without needing to move their car. These updates not only reduce traffic congestion and emissions - they also enhance the rider experience and help connect people with local shops, restaurants, and attractions, reinforcing Chattanooga’s commitment to accessible, sustainable urban mobility."
The new all-electric shuttles, expected to go into service following procurement and delivery, will feature upgraded technology and air conditioning - helping CARTA deliver a modern transit experience while contributing to a cleaner, healthier Chattanooga, it was stated.
