Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame to Induct 10

Class of 2015 to Go in Sunday May 3

A trio of grade school friends who later played D-I college sports, a quartet of tennis champions and a 12-sport letter winner in college head the Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2015 who will be inducted Sunday May 3 at 3 p.m. at the Lookout Mountain School gym.

 

Rob Healy (football, Ga.

Tech), King Oehmig (golf, UVa.) and Forrest Simmons (tennis UNC) were classmates (’63) at Lookout Mountain School and parlayed their grade school athletic careers, in part, under the tutelage of coach Buck Stamps into D-I college careers.

 

Well known for producing nationally known tennis players, Lookout Mountain honors a quartet of net stars in Chris Brown, Eric Voges, Sue Webb and Simmons.

 

Yogi Anderson grew up on the ball fields at the Lookout Mountain Playground, won a state wrestling title at Notre Dame and earned an impressive 12 varsity letters at the U. of the South.

 

While Healy was running over would be tacklers while at Ga. Tech, Toby Silberman (football official) was making sure everyone played by the rules as a longtime back judge in the Southern Conference and the SEC.

 

Bill Caulkins (softball) is widely known for his longtime career as a Chattanooga Swim League official, but on Lookout Mountain he was the Church League Softball Commissioner for 50 years.

 

The late Skeeter Johnston was well known in U.S. Polo circles and led his teams to multiple national team titles.

* Chris Brown (Notre Dame/Ga. Tech)

Three-time Southern singles champ (1959-61-62) … three-time state high school champ (1962-63-64) … led ND to two state team titles …. Chattanooga Men’s City champ  ... ranked top 10 nationally in various age groups in early 60s … member of U.S. Jr. Davis Cup … reached Kalamazoo semis (national hard courts) in 18s.... * Bill Caulkins (McCallie School/UNC/Alabama)
50 year career as Commissioner and player for Lookout Mountain Men’s Slowpitch Softball League … longtime area swim referee and meet coordinator … season-ending meet is now known as the Caulkins City Swim Meet … member of McCallie’s 1947 Mid-South football championship team. ... * Rob Healy (Baylor School/Ga. Tech)

Two-time national prep wrestling champ (1968-69) … Three-time Mid-South winner … 100-yard dash champion in 1968 and two-time Mid-South pole vault winner … Rye Bell Award winner as finest prep athlete in Chattanooga in 1969 … played in three bowl games for Ga. * Skeeter Johnston (Baylor School/Eckard College) (posthumously)

Co-Founder of the North American Polo League … Governor-at large of U.S. Polo Association … captain of his teams which won the 1988 $100,000 Gold Cup, the 1982 Cartier International Open, the USPA Heritage Cup (twice) and 2003 Hall of Fame Cup.

 

* King Oehmig (Baylor School/Virginia)

Coached Baylor golfers to 21 state team championships (12 girls, nine boys) …. National golf coach of the year, 2006-07 … five different girls won 11 individual state titles and three different boys won four individual championships …. lettered three years at Baylor and all-Mid-South, 1968-69 … lettered four years at Virginia and was team MVP ...
