Chattanooga's Gilpin, Relay Team Finish Sixth

  • Saturday, March 21, 2015

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) placed sixth in the men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase and the men’s DMR also placed sixth on the final day of the John Mitchel Alabama Relays at the Sam Bailey Track.

Gilpin just missed his best time in the race, finishing sixth with a time of 9:43.43. The men’s Distance Medley Relay team finished sixth at the meet with a time of 10:11.46. Junior Austin Casassa (Nashville, Tenn.) led off the race for the Mocs with Geoff Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn.) taking the baton for the 400 meter leg.

Junior Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) ran the 800 for Chattanooga and handed off to junior Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) for the final 1600 meter leg.

“Austin led off great,” UTC head coach Bill Gautier said. “He ran a 3:05 but we just couldn’t keep it up.”

In the women’s DMR, junior Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.) started the Mocs with the 1200 meter leg with junior Kiaana Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) running the 400 meter leg despite nursing an injured hamstring. She handed off the sophomore Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.) for the 800 meter with sophomore Maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.) running the anchor.

“We did ok this weekend,” Gautier said. “We ran some races really well, and then struggled a bit in the others. On Friday, Teghan [Henderson] (Pickering, Ontario) and Amanda [Cotter] (Bristol, Conn.) started too hard in the 5K and didn’t have as good a race as they could have and all three in the [women’s] 1500 PR’d.”

The Mocs will be back in action next weekend at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational all day on Saturday, March 28.

“We’re hoping to regroup and have some good performances at Georgia Tech,” Gautier said.
