Tennessee Virtual Academy Deserves To Stay Open

  • Friday, April 10, 2015

The state legislature is currently debating the future of virtual schools against the backdrop of an order by the Tennessee Commissioner of Education to close what happens to be one of the fastest improving public schools in the state, the Tennessee Virtual Academy.

I’ve worked with TNVA since its first year and bear witness to how important this option is for students, including children with learning and physical disabilities, English language learners, and others who were not succeeding in traditional schools.  I’ve taught special needs students who fled their local school because they were bullied so badly.  At TNVA, they are in a safe environment where they can focus on learning.

TNVA has raised its achievement results every year and is improving at a faster rate than the other schools with the same rating.  Despite this success, TNVA’s students face the real threat of losing their school.

As a life-long educator, I know how important it is to encourage and support students who are showing progress.  I would never give up on them.  The same should be true for our schools.  TNVA has earned the opportunity to continue serving students.  The Governor and state legislators should help keep TNVA open.
