An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment and arrest of two former deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

At the request of 10th District Attorney General Steve Crump, TBI special agents began investigating former captain Bill Johnson and former detective Derrick Graves on Jan. 16. During the course of the investigation, agents determined that on April 19, 2014, the men were deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and were involved in the assault of an individual who had been arrested and was in restraints at the Monroe County Jail.

Johnson, 44, and Graves, 24, were terminated from their positions in September 2014 during an internal investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

On Wednesday, the Monroe County Grand Jury returned indictments against Johnson and Graves, charging each with one count of assault and one count of official misconduct. Both were arrested by TBI Agents on Thursday and booked into the Monroe County Jail. Bond was set at $5,000 for each.
