Scam Against Elderly Demands Payment For "Missing" Jury Service

  • Thursday, June 4, 2015

Circuit Court Clerk Larry Henry said the scam is running again in which callers tell mainly elderly people they need to send money in order to avoid jail for missing jury service.

Mr. Henry said no one from his office makes any such calls and those who receive them should report them to the sheriff's office.

Margo McConnell, jury coordinator, said, "I was getting three or four calls a day from people who have gotten the scam calls. Now it is up to eight or 10 a day."

She said the caller either poses as a Hamilton County jury coordinator or jury clerk.

The person getting the call is told they are in trouble for not reporting for jury service. They are told that if they make a credit card payment they will not have to go to jail.

She said, "Some have been told to pay $750, others $1,200 and one was told the amount was $2,600."

Ms. McConnell said several callers have told her they were about to make the payment when they decided to check with the clerk's office to make sure.

She said when attempts are made to try to go back and call the number that was on the caller ID it shows it as an invalid number.

Ms. McConnell said one person who had recently served on a jury happened to get one of the calls. She said, "She was very upset that someone had found out about her serving. But I assured her our jury system records are secure and no one from the outside can get access to them."

She said the scammers appear to be targeting elderly people.

"My own father got one of the calls," she said.

Several years ago, former Circuit Court Clerk Paula Thompson warned about a similar scam.
