EPB Still Investigating Cause Of Power Surges That Brought Booms, Flashes In The Sky; Over 15,000 Customers Lost Power

  • Tuesday, August 11, 2015

EPB officials are still investigating the cause of power surges late Monday night that caused booms and flashes of light in the sky.

It also knocked out power to over 15,000 customers for a brief time.

John Pless of EPB said, "The problem appears to have been on a 46,000-volt circuit. The investigation will continue today to determine what went wrong."

Areas affected included Chattanooga Valley, Lookout Mountain, Rossville, Fort Oglethorpe, East Ridge and part of the Southside, he said.

Some customers, including some in Brainerd, lost power earlier in the night.

EPB reported at 11:26 p.m.: "We're working w/smart grid to restore power to people in Rossville, Fort O, Lookout Mnt and Chatt Valley. Investigating issue at substation."

Mr. Pless said later Tuesday, "Last night the EPB smart grid, system operators, and line crews worked together to restore power within an hour to 15,188 customers who were impacted by an outage. The service areas affected included parts of North Georgia, South Chattanooga and East Ridge.

"At this point, EPB is still investigating the exact cause of the problems which damaged a pole and disrupted a high-voltage power line, but it is likely that storms earlier in the day played some role.

"Once service was restored, EPB crews spent several hours clearing a path to the damage and repairing it. We appreciate our customers’ patience during the time their electric power service was being restored."
