Mocs Volleyball Wins In Three Over Western Carolina

  • Saturday, September 26, 2015
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team dominated Western Carolina in a three-set match, making the squad 2-0 in Southern Conference play. UTC improves to 13-2 for the first time since 1986 and is on a nine-match winning streak, the longest since 1999.

"Our offense continues to be a strength," head coach Travis Filar stated. "That goes towards our passers getting us into system, Lauren Greenspoon putting our hitters in great position to be aggressive and our hitters taking care of the ball."

Chattanooga didn't allow the Catamounts to reach above 18 points in any set.
In the second frame, Western Carolina only put up 12.

The Mocs got off to a great start, posting six kills in the first eight points of the match.

In the third frame, UTC went down by five at 8-3 but climbed its way back. After 15-15, the Mocs only lost three points, including four kills in a row to clinch the match 25-18.

Chattanooga had a strong offensive performance, recording a .384 attack percentage.

"Overall this weekend, Allie Davenport was phenomenal," said Filar. "She is a consistent go-to attacker for us, and we knew she was capable of that. It's great to see her step up into that role."

Junior Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) made a big impact by making 17 kills paired with a .395 hitting percentage.

"I tried to go out there and play freely," Davenport said. "On Friday night, the back row really set the tone. I knew that if I swung and got blocked, they'd be there to cover me. I felt really confident."

Sophomore Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) set the attackers 45 times.

Senior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) racked up a team-high of 14 digs and four aces.

"Serving is huge for us," explained Filar. "We spend a lot of time on being aggressive with our serves. We put a lot of pressure on Western Carolina from the service line."

The Mocs continue league play on Tuesday as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to face Wofford at 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.). UTC is back at home Friday to play Mercer in Maclellan Gym at 6:00 p.m.
