Ironman Competitor Dies During Swim Competition

An Ironman competitor died during the swim portion of the event held in Chattanooga on Sunday.

A spokesperson said, "We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our athletes participating in today's IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga triathlon. The athlete required medical attention during the swim and was transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated. Our condolences go out to the athlete's family and friends, whom we will continue to support."

The man required medical help during the 1.2-mile swim portion of the event.

He was pulled from the Tennessee River by emergency crews, and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity was not immediately released.
